Washoe County School District Performing Arts Educators Get Virtual Platform
Our Virtual Ensemble has announced an agreement with the Washoe County School District authorizing teachers to use the OVE virtual music curriculum and platform for Performing Arts Educators to continue teaching and inspiring their students through adjusted learning environments. This is the only approved system for WCSD for performing-arts based distance learning. Music instructors receive the tools to help students virtually learn, practice, and record pieces or routines as an ensemble, provide feedback to individual members, and share performances virtually.
“We’re excited by this agreement as it empowers teachers to facilitate a higher level of ensemble music-making in the virtual learning environment,” said WCSD Music Supervisor Amy Barthel. “The music educators don’t need to reinvent virtual processes for performance and production, practice and self-evaluation or technology standards and outcomes. Instead they can focus on teaching.”
The Virtual Classroom is an interactive website set up specifically for each participating ensemble, walking students through the process of learning and practicing their music, with places for instructional videos made by the teacher, and helping the students record and submit their videos for evaluation. The recorded assignments are collected for the teacher to review. Then the OVE team edits the package together to share with audiences.
“A segment of kids only come to school because of their love of the music and the sense of belonging from being part of an ensemble. We wanted to save music in schools,” says GPG Music owner and OVE co-founder Steve Martin, DMA, (ASCAP). “We are donating the use of our music, but teachers still have to fund their projects at the site level. It would be fantastic if each school received community support.”
OVE is including music licensing for concert band, concert percussion, marching band, indoor percussion, drumline, color guard, dance, and orchestra selections available from GPG Music, parent company of OVE. Choirs can also participate but will have to secure their own music.
